Choosing an SMS API in South Africa: compare total cost

The useful way to compare SMS API pricing is to price the same audience and final message under the same assumptions. A headline rate does not tell you the complete cost, and this guide does not claim SMSFlow is always the cheapest provider.

Start with a like-for-like sending example

At SMSFlow’s standard 16c excluding VAT per segment, 10,000 recipients receiving one segment each cost R1,600.00 excluding VAT or R1,840.00 including VAT. Two segments per recipient cost R3,200.00 excluding or R3,680.00 including VAT. These are arithmetic illustrations, not customer results or separate bundle offers.

Check the assumptions behind the unit rate

  • VAT: compare prices on the same tax basis.
  • Segments: use the actual final text and longest personalised values, not just the number of recipients.
  • Account conditions: check purchase minimums, validity and any relevant fees in current terms; do not assume credits last indefinitely.
  • Integration effort: include development, error handling, monitoring and support requirements.
  • Outcome information: confirm what the API and operating workflow actually expose, without assuming a public delivery-status or replies endpoint.

Validate the integration before committing a campaign budget

Authenticate on your backend, check balance and send a controlled test to an authorised recipient. Keep secrets outside source code and browser/mobile clients. Confirm validation and timeout handling; replaying an uncertain send can duplicate messages and charges.

The API product page includes a request example. Use the authoritative quickstart and error reference for implementation detail.

Use the route your team can operate

Choose the official .NET, Node.js or Python SDK for a supported backend stack, raw HTTP for another language, or the SQL worker for its supported queue model. For occasional human-led campaigns, the web portal may be the more practical starting point.

Compare current costs

Review SMS and WhatsApp pricing and verify account-specific conditions in the portal. For volume or specialist needs, discuss requirements with SMSFlow. Price comparisons need dated evidence and equivalent assumptions; this article supplies no unsupported competitor ranking.

Compare the same campaign, not just the advertised rate

A useful quote comparison specifies South African recipients, message encoding and parts, VAT, credit validity, purchase conditions and the supported integration. Ask each provider to price the same message and recipient count. A lower headline rate does not establish the lowest total cost for your workflow.

At SMSFlow’s standard rate, 1,000 one-part messages cost R160 excluding VAT / R184 including VAT; two parts per recipient cost R320 / R368. Compare current SMSFlow prices and the supported API capabilities before committing. No market-wide lowest-price claim is made here.
