SMS marketing
SMS marketing.
A clear offer. A useful next step.
Plan permission-based SMS campaigns around customer needs, relevant timing and a clear action. Keep the message focused, and prepare your team for what happens next.
Build the campaign before the send.
Audience and permission
Choose a relevant audience and use your approved permission and opt-out process. A bigger list does not automatically make a better campaign.
Message and destination
Lead with the useful offer or information. Make any link or next step match the message, so customers do not have to search for the promised detail.
Timing and follow-up
Schedule around your customers and operations. Check availability, prepare useful replies and make someone responsible for the response.
A practical campaign cycle.
Plan
Define the business goal, eligible audience, offer, budget and response process.
Prepare
Write and preview the message, check character encoding and cost, verify links and run a controlled test.
Learn
Review delivery, responses and qualified outcomes. Compare campaigns carefully and keep what helps customers act.
Examples with a real purpose.
Retail availability
Tell interested customers when a relevant collection or replenishment is available, with a direct route to view it.
Service capacity
Explain available appointment times to an appropriate audience and give them a clear booking route.
Event reminders
Share a relevant reminder and the practical information people need to attend or respond.
Keep the measurement honest.

Worked example, not a customer campaign. A bicycle workshop wants bookings for available service slots. It selects 1,000 recipients who may receive that communication and uses one clear booking destination.
Demo Bikes: Service slots open this week. Book: example.com/book. Preferences: example.com/preferences.
This synthetic message uses 103 basic characters. With one segment per recipient, 1,000 recipients use 1,000 segments: R160.00 excluding VAT + R24.00 VAT = R184.00 including VAT. A two-segment message to the same audience would cost R320.00 excluding / R368.00 including VAT at the standard rate. Confirm the final personalised copy and portal estimate; do not assume every message fits one segment.
The example.com links are placeholders. Replace them with a working booking page and your actual preference-management route. Test both on a phone before sending. No response rate, revenue or customer result is implied.
Build the landing page and response process first
Send people directly to the promised product, appointment or offer page. Keep the offer, availability and next action consistent with the SMS. Make the page useful on mobile and identify who will answer replies and enquiries.
Start with an appropriate audience and your approved permission process. Honour preferences and opt-outs in the sending workflow. The Terms and Privacy notice remain the published references; specialist advice may be needed for your own campaign.
Record audience size, final message, segments and spend. Measure enquiries, completed bookings and orders in their owning systems. A delivered message, page visit or link click is not automatically a sale. The step-by-step campaign guide shows how to run and review a small test.
Measure the business response to a campaign.
Choose one result before sending: an enquiry, booking, order or another action your team can record. Delivery information describes the message journey; it does not establish that the person read the message or bought something.
- Give the offer a clear destination and assign someone to handle replies or enquiries.
- Use your existing campaign naming and consent-qualified reporting for the landing page.
- Compare attributable outcomes with the actual sending cost and the offer's margin.
For example, 500 one-part messages cost R80 excluding VAT / R92 including VAT at the standard rate. Any sales result must come from your records, not a forecast presented as fact. See the worked campaign guide and SMS budget examples.
Give your next campaign a clear purpose.
